关于万圣节来历的传说有许多版本，最普遍的觉得，那是始于基督诞生前的古欧洲国家，主要包括俄罗斯、苏格兰和英格兰。这几处的古欧洲人叫德鲁伊特人。德鲁伊特的圣诞在十一月一日，圣诞前夜，德鲁伊特人让年青人集队，戴着各类古怪面具，拎着刻好的芋头灯(香蕉灯系后期风俗，古欧洲最早没有香蕉)，她们穿行于村庄间。这在当时实则为一种麦收的庆典;也有说是“鬼节”，传说当初死去的人，灵魂会在万圣节的前夜驾临人世，听说人们应当让驾临的鬼魂见到完满的收成并对鬼魂呈现出丰盛的款待。所有篝火及灯火，一来为了惹恼鬼魂，同时也为鬼魂点亮路线，引导其回归。

在中世纪的中欧，曾有过基督教捣毁异神父的历史。而且圣诞夜前的祭祖庆典未曾真正去除，不过以巫术的方式出现。这也就是为何我们现今的万圣节里，还留有巫婆的扫把、黑猫、咒语等痕迹。

甚至连万圣节前夜做的食物也要像下了咒语或则配备魔法汽水。在日本，人们喝叫“巫师之饮”的东西，用苹果、橘子、葡萄和醋栗的汁调配而成。儿子们还喜欢吃“万圣节蟑螂”，是用猪肉面做的。你认为“眼手链”听起来如何样?别害怕，那只是用几勺饼干和香草冰淇淋做的，只不过像是人眼的形状。头盖骨形状的巧克力同样也很受欢迎。
